Who can help?

There are many resources to help you find an exciting career. The best approach is to use a combination of the following so you get the full story on the career direction you are considering.

Speak with a qualified career counsellor

If you don’t have access to one at school, TAFE or university, talk to your local Job Network member, a Centrelink adviser or a private career counsellor or visit the Australian Association of Career Counsellors website. If you are Indigenous then an Indigenous Youth Employment Consultant can help you out.

Go to careers and training expos

There are experts in a variety of careers on hand and ready to give you their stories and advice. Visit eocexpos.com.au to find out when the next career expo is coming to your town or city. Also, universities and TAFES run their own career expos and fairs so visit their websites for the details.

Read position vacant ads

A great way to find out what different jobs really involve, the skills and qualifications employers expect and what they’re paying is to visit jobsearch.gov.au and keep your eye on job ads on other job vacancy websites.

Talk to employers

Find out what it’s like to work with them, what skills or experience you need to get a job with them, and what type of person they think is best suited to working in their industry.

Contact employer and industry organisations

Find out what’s going on in their industry and the best way to get a start. Talk to other people about their careers to see if you like the sound of them

Ask them what they do, what they like and don’t like about their job and how they got their start. If you have a career counsellor they may be able to set you up to talk to someone in the career you’re interested in.

Remember, to make an informed decision about whether a career is for you, you need to know the negatives as well as the positives.

Allow yourself plenty of time to park the car, walk from the train/bus to ensure you get to the interview on time. Visiting the location a day before the interview will give you a good idea of how long it will take to get there.
